Charlotte Symphony announces 2015-16 Pops season
May 22, 2015The Charlotte Symphony Orchestra's 2015-16 Pops lineup will begin with a guy who has been singing in the rain for six decades and end with a woman who has reigned as one of Broadway's leading singers for four.
The Gene Kelly-Debbie Reynolds film "Singin' in the Rain" opens the season, as the CSO performs the Oscar-nominated score in sync with the movie. It ends with Bernadette Peters returning to Charlotte after seven years. In between come R&B artists Boyz II Men, unclassifiable Randy Newman and tributes to Frank Sinatra and Neil Diamond.
Season subscriptions to the series, which is sponsored by Bank of America, range from $198 to $429 for six concerts and $288 to $605 for 10 concerts. Albert-George Schram conducts, except as noted. Details: 704-972-2000 or charlottesymphony.org.
Here's the lineup:
Sept. 18-19: "Singin' in the Rain," Belk Theater.
Oct. 2-3: "A Frank Sinatra Tribute" with Steve Lippia, Knight Theater. Steve Sigmund conducts.
Oct. 30: "Super Diamond The Neil Diamond Experience," Belk Theater.
Nov. 13-14: "A Salute to America's Heroes," featuring the U.S. Naval Academy Men's Glee Club, Knight Theater. Sacred music, popular hymns and military anthems.
Dec. 3-6: "Magic of Christmas," Belk Theater. Oratorio Singers of Charlotte and guests round out the bill.
Jan. 15: Randy Newman, Belk Theater. The double Oscar-winner has a song catalog that goes back almost 50 years.
Feb. 12-13: "A Symphonic Valentine," Knight Theater. Eva Noblezada, the Northwest School of the Arts grad who went on to star in "Miss Saigon" in London, supplies vocals.
March 12: "Boyz II Men," Belk Theater. Conductor TBA.
April 1-2: "Bond and Beyond," Knight Theater. Hilary Kole does the singing, and Schram adds themes from other films and TV shows with spy/detective roots.
May 7: Bernadette Peters, Belk Theater.
