Charlotte Symphony cancels upcoming 6-concert schedule as N.C. stays in Phase 2

The Charlotte Symphony has canceled its six-program live-performance schedule for August due to ongoing restrictions on large events in North Carolina.

The Symphony, which shut down performances in March, planned to restart with a festival of six events Aug. 7 through 22, including a free concert at Knight Theater Aug. 16 with music from the movies "Star Wars" and "Pirates of the Caribbean."

N.C. Gov. Roy Cooper announced Tuesday that Phase 2 of the state's reopening plan, in regard to the pandemic, would extend at least another three weeks. One of the elements of Phase 2 is restricting large gatherings, such as concerts.

"To say that we are disappointed would be an understatement," interim Symphony President and CEO Michelle Hamilton said in a statement Wednesday.
